The Island’s multi-layered 500-year-old history includes the Lime Quarry, Robert Sobukwe’s house, the Bluestone quarry, the army and navy bunkers and the Maximum Security Prison where thousands of South Africa’s freedom fighters were incarcerated for years. The tour culminates with a viewing of Nelson Mandela’s cell.

Table Mountain

Whether it is covered in a blanket of moody clouds or showing off against a crisp cloudless blue sky, Table Mountain, 15.3km from Lagoon Beach is always spectacular. Table Mountain, home to the richest, yet smallest floral kingdom on earth, was voted one of the New Seven Wonders of the World in 2011.

The easiest option for getting up the mountain is the cableway, which has attracted a whopping 24million visitors since it first opened in 1929. Significantly revamped in 1997, the cable-cars now carry up to 65 passengers per trip. The journey up the mountain takes about five minutes and the cable cars rotate through 360 degrees during the trip, giving remarkable views of the mountain below.

While the cableway is convenient and fun, you’ll get a richer experience by hiking up or down using one of the popular routes. The cableway station at the top of the mountain has a curio shop, a shop where you can stock up on snacks, and a restaurant. Robben Island, where South Africa’s most famous president, Nelson Mandela was imprisoned, is a must-see. In the compound you can visit the cell where Mandela spent 18 years of his life. Outside the compound, you see the iconic skyline of Cape Town, ominously out of reach.

You can learn about the trials and tribulations of what was once the city’s soul, District Six, once a booming neighbourhood, home to 60,000+ merchants and immigrants. Under apartheid law District Six was made a white only sector and by 1968 families were forcibly removed and relocated over 25 km away to the Cape Flats. You can tour the area with guides who were evicted in 1968.

Spectacular nature

At almost any location in or around Cape Town, you look up and see the magnificent Table Mountain. It dominates the horizon around the city and is, without doubt, Cape Town’s most famous landmark. Seeing it from below is an awesome sight but you can also head up the mountain and see the landscape from a different view. You can jump on the cable cars and enjoy an easy glide up to the top or take one of a few different trails ranging from 3-10km that lead up to the top.
