South Africa is a great place with many adventurous places.  The country has over a dozen regional parks and reserves, a wealth of top-rated accommodation, farmlands and vineyards. South Africa has beautiful beaches, with ample comfort and thrill-seeking excitement.

The country is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean on the west and the Indian Ocean on the south and east; although the climate differs across various regions and environments, temperatures remain comfortable throughout the year.

The Blyde River Canyon has breath-taking viewpoints that overlook waterfalls and rock formations where the Drakensberg slope and lowveld meet. The Cape Peninsula is a spine of mountains that run down the peninsula from Table Mountain to Cape Point. The Drakensberg has awesome peaks and formations like an Amphitheatre. The Wild Coast boasts green hills with scattered pastel rondavels, rocky cliffs and serene beaches.

South Africa’s environments and wildlife.

South Africa has diverse, accessible parks and reserves that are swarming with animals, these parks and reserves are well known destinations to spot wildlife, including lions, leopards, buffalo, elephant and rhino.  For the greatest safaris it is best to visit between May and August, when there is less rain and dense vegetation, making animal sightings far more frequent.

Whether you head inland or along the coast, the large country sides offer an invigorating sense of freedom.  There are rocky hills and plains that cover the western part of the country with spring wildflowers.  Some areas are covered with golden sunflowers, corn fields and grassland with amazing mountain backdrops.  Besides sunshine and swimming, the many beaches have spectacular marine displays.

South Africa’s tumultuous history, and strong sense of the past.

Cape Town has walking tours that cover sights from the Castle of Good Hope to District Six Museum. There are liberation trail spots like Constitution Hill in Johannesburg and Robben Island in the Cape that commemorate the anti-apartheid struggle. The Apartheid Museum in Johannesburg reminds visitors about the seriousness of the era of segregation.

South Africa’s real cultural experiences.

You can have hands-on experiences of diverse traditions and beliefs, which is hugely rewarding. Townships from Soweto to Khayelitsha offer interactive, themed tours. The Wild Coast, the former Xhosa homeland run lodges and offer accommodation, activities and volunteering opportunities.  In the Venda region, you can meet the former homeland’s artists and explore a sacred forest.  In Zululand you can learn about South Africa’s largest ethnic group on visits to villages and ceremonies.

You must sample South Africa’s tasty produce!  From Cape Malay curries in Cape Town’s Bo-Kaap to Xhosa dishes in the townships, you won’t be disappointed.  There are many food markets to try farm-fresh goodies.  When visiting don’t be hesitant to try a wine tour where you can experience centuries of stunning estates and wine farms.
